Letters From Mrs. Grieves

Tuesday, January 28, 2010
Dear Parents,
We are officially halfway through the school year. Unfortunately, we continue to have some problems. There have
been many late papers and missing assignments throughout the year. I've tried explaining the importance of this
and being responsible, with no success. For this reason, I called the middle school counselor to find out their
policy on late work and missing assignments and wanted to share this with you.
All assignments are expected to be finished on time. If an assignment is late, the grade on that assignment drops
20 percent. So, instead of receiving a 100%, you would receive 80%. If an assignment is more than 2 weeks late, it
becomes a zero.
They have an automated system there. After a teacher enters a grade, you would be notified through email if an
assignment was missing or if it was a failing grade.
Another problem we've had in fourth grade is being ready on time. I understand that buses can be late. That is not
the issue. There is a lot of visiting going on in the hallways as well as in the room. At St. Anne's, students enter
the building at 8 AM. They are to be ready to go, in their seats by 8:10.
At the middle school, if students are not in their classrooms on time, they are marked tardy. After 3 unexcused
tardies, they have lunch detention. For every three unexcused tardies, their grade is lowered by one third. The
counselor gave me an example of a girl she had spoken with this morning. This student, who should be receiving a B
in math, is actually receiving a D because of all of her unexcused absences!
So, as you can see, my concern is legitimate. I'm hoping that you can help me with this by stressing the importance
of responsibility. This year's schedule is very different for me. I wish I could do more of the fun things that I
was able to in other years, but I can't. Time does not allow it, especially when I struggle to get the things done
that I need to get done. With your help, the second half of the year can be even more productive.
Sincerely,
Mary Grieves
