Letters From Mrs. Grieves

Friday, April 18
Dear Parents,
Enclosed you will find your child's mid-trimester report. I met with each student individually to talk about their current grades and how we need to try our best until the end of the year. Can you believe there is only 6 weeks (28 school days) of school left?
Have you heard about two special projects we did during religion class?
1. After reading an article in the Free Press about Sister Lauren Spence and her "Mother Bear Project," my students volunteered to make a donation of $1 so we could sponsor a bear! We received notice that they found a bear dressed in red and blue, per our request, that will be sent to
a child suffering from AIDS in Africa.
2. We wrote a class letter to Rosa, an El Salvadorian student our school is sponsoring. We received notification our letter was sent on to her. Included with that notification, was our same letter, translated in Spanish! It was fun to see the differences/similarities in our languages. Students also received Rosa's address and e-mail if they choose to write to her on their own.
Next week we will focus on "Pourquoi Tales". Pourquoi tales are folk tales that explain how something in nature came to be. For example, I will be reading, "How the Barn Swallow Got Its Tail".
In English, we've been learning about adverbs. This is a short unit and we will have our final test next week.
We've begun learning about Statistics and Probability in math class. Hopefully the Minnesota Twins will begin raising their stats!
Our rocks and mineral unit in Science will come to an end on Tuesday, when we paint rocks. I want to thank Mrs. Clark for coming in to help and Mrs. Doherty for donating rocks to be painted. We've had different speakers come to our class throughout this unit including Mary Carlson, Art and Barb Straub, and Taylor Svihel. Last Tuesday, we took a trip to McGraw Monuments to learn about the kind of rocks they use there and where the rocks come from.
In Social Studies, we're continuing the skill lessons and doing coordinating activity pages. We're learning to read maps, tables, time lines, and time zones.
Have a great weekend!
Mary
