Letters From Miss Justen
October 7, 2008
Dear Families,
Thank you for getting all of those mystery bags in! We opened our first one today and the children did an excellent job watching quietly and using what they know about their classmates to determine the owner of the bag. It was Sadie's bag, so she will be the one to fill out and display her Star Student chart.
Each teacher has been asked to choose a student who has shown the character trait that we have been working on for the month. September's trait was respect. I chose Sadie because she is polite, offers to help her classmates, and takes responsibility for her actions. It wasn't an easy choice; there are so many students in this class who make wonderful decisions!
This Friday is Grandparents' Day. If your child will be leaving with someone, please make sure to send a note. Children will not be excused early without prior written consent.
If you haven't done so already, please stop in or call to sign up for conferences. I look forward to seeing you then.
A look at the next two weeks:
Reading
We are at the end of our first Reading theme: Silly Stories. This week's focus will be on reading some poetry. Next week we will start their first Reading-Writing Workshop. Each student will write a silly story of their choosing and we will then work through the writing process as they revise and edit.
Spelling
This week's spelling words are some more short vowel words, as well as long vowel words. Next week there won't be a spelling test given the short week.
Math
We will be testing on our second chapter this week and then moving on to a chapter on basic subtraction. Please continue to work on these basic facts at home. The better they know them, the easier later math concepts will be.
Religion
We are going to start preparing for Reconciliation by looking at the very beginning: the angels. We will also be talking over the 7 Sacraments and the Ten Commandments.
Health/Science
Science began last week with our unit on habitats. We will be reading about and discussing 4 different habitats: woodland forest, rainforest, the Arctic, and deserts. We also have one topic yet to cover in our Health unit.
God Bless,
April Justen
