Letters From Miss Justen

November 4 , 2008

Dear Families,

Our month on Building Peace has ended and we are now focusing on Empathy. It was difficult choosing one student who stood out in the area of building peace. I suppose that is because there aren't a great number of conflicts that I witness - thankfully! Although there could have been a few children selected, I have chosen Evan. He readily accepts any partner he is paired with, is always willing to help whether or not he has been asked to do so, and calmly talks over problems when they arise. Congratulations Evan!

As I'm sure you are already aware, we have been working on reducing the waste in our cafeteria. We have ranged anywhere from a quarter of a pound to two and a half pounds of waste. What seems clear is that it depends on what meal is served that day. We are trying to learn to gauge how hungry we are and how much we are truly capable of eating. This can be a difficult thing for adults, let alone children!

A look at the next two weeks:

Reading
This week we will read a story called Around the Pond: Who's Been Here? Some of the skills we will be looking at are multiple meaning words, exclamations and using guide words in a dictionary. Next week they will be reading and comparing a fiction and nonfiction piece on owls. This section includes a review of skills already taught in this theme.

Spelling
This week's spelling words are those with double consonants. Next week's spelling list is a review list.

Math
Last week we tested on our chapter on basic subtraction. Overall, the children did very well! We will begin our chapter on data and graphing today.

Religion
We have taken a cursory look at the Ten Commandments and the Sacraments and are continuing to work through an explanation of prayers that takes the children through an explanation of some bible stories.

Social Studies
We are continuing our look at citizenship and government.

God Bless,

April Justen
